Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math
The advent of Sri Madhavacharya and his Dwaita Philosophy saw an event of far reaching consequences in the history of the Gaud Saraswat Brahmins of Goa. This was the era in which the community split into two. That amazing figure of Indian History, Philosophy and Religion, Sri Madhavacharya, had won over the hearts and minds of Gaud Saraswats with his Dwaita philosophy. These Saraswats became the Vaishnavs, as opposed to the remaining who were “Smartas”.
Sri Madhavacharya established the Ashta Math at Udipi to propagate his school of Thought. One of the Maths, the Phalimaru Math was accepted by the Vaishnav Gaud Saraswats, settled along the West coast, as their spiritual Gurupeeth in 1475. The tenth Acharya, Sri Ramachandra Teerth, was taken seriously ill during a pilgrimage to the Himalayas. Fearing a break in the lineage of Acharyas of the Math in the event of his death, the Acharya appointed a young Saraswat Batu, from amongst his followers as his disciple giving him the name, Sri Narayan Teerth.
Sri Narayan Teerth decided to visit the holy Pilgrimage centres of the North, and thus came to visit Kashi. In Kashi, Swamiji was wrongly accused of a theft by the King’s soldiers. When convinced of Swamiji’s innocence, the King prostrated before Swamiji, asking for forgiveness. Sri Narayan Teerth Swamiji asked the King for a Math to be built on the banks of the river which would serve the Gaud Saraswat community when they visited to worship at the holy place. The King readily agreed happy to have been let off lightly, his soldier’s error forgiven.
When Sri Narayan Teerth Swamiji returned to Udipi, he found that Sri Ramchandra Teerth Swamiji had recovered from his life threatening ailment. The Dravid followers of the Guru Swami did not want a Saraswat Swami, to take over authority of the Math. Disturbed, the GuruSwami found a way out, requesting Sri Narayan Teerth Swamiji to establish a glorious Math of his own community of the Gaud Saraswat Brahmins. Accordingly, Sri Narayan Teerth Swamiji erected a Math at Bhatkal and so started the tradition of the Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math.
The Third Acharya of the Math, Sri Jeevottam Teerth Swamiji established a Math at Gokarn, and the Math started being known as Shree Gokarn Math. In the Shree Gokarn Math, Swamiji installed Bhoo-Vijay Vithal, one of three idols he had found in a stream during his pilgrimage to the North. The second idol, that of Shree Dig-Vijay Vitthal, was installed at a sub-Math in Basroor. And the third, Shree
Veer Vithal was taken as his personal deity. To this day, this tradition of Swamiji’s personally worshipping the Idol of Shree Veer Vithal, has continued. The fifth Swamiji, Sri Anujeevottam Teerth established a math at Bicholim in Goa. The sixth Swamiji, Sri Ramchandra Teerth established a math at Partagali, which eventually became the main Math.
As years went by, due to the intelligence and spiritual powers of the Swamijis, the Math grew stronger and stronger, established its centres all over India. Through the difficult times of the Portuguese invasion and occupation of Goa, it was the courage of the Swamijis of our Math which gave the community the strength which saw them through the difficult years. The Math was a strong symbol of the Vaishnav G.S.B. community, a beacon of hope; a glorious institution which we could be proud of, and in its glory, the Math gave the community the inspiration to conquer whatever difficulties came their way.
Vidhyadheeraj Teerth Shreepad Vader Swamiji took over the highest spiritual seat of our community in 1973. In the last 38 years H.H. Swami Maharaj, has worked round the clock, neglectingars personal needs and health, for the Math, and for the community.
During this time, innumerable maths were taken up for renovation and wayward lands of the Maths were taken into firm possession. Varanasi, Basroor, Gokarn, Partagali Math, Ankola, Mangalore, Gangolli were some of the Maths renovated. New Maths were constructed at Yellapur, Manki, Hubli, Badrikashram, Belgaum, Dandeli, Madgaon, Porvorim, Bhadravati, Nasik, Kandaloor, Vasco, and so on. Almost all the Vrindavans of the Yativaryas in the Math tradition were renovated.
New Kalyan Mandaps were built at existing Math premises in Bhatkal, Mangalore, Rivona, Gangolli, Ankola, Bicholim, and so on. Through two charitable trusts, the Swami Dwarkanath Vishwasth Mandal and the Sri Vidhyadheeraj Dharmaday Vishvasth Mandal, H.H. Swami Maharaj carries out charitable works in the field of health, education etc.
Famed for a prodigal memory, perfect discipline, and great learning. the warmth of Sri Swami Maharaj towards his community disciples impresses all who take his blessings. In 1998, H. H. Swami Maharaj undertook the historic Gandaki Yatra.
Sri Swami Maharaj is a Kullavi of Shri Ramnath which is a source of great pride to all devotees of Shri Ramnath.
Param Pujya Guruswami Srimad Vidyadhiraj Teerth Swami Maharaj was contemplating to have a suitable Batu to be inducted in the Math Hierarchy as a Shishya and who will subsequently be the 24th Mathadheepati. Their efforts yielded success around the year 2014. It so happened that during the 2012 Chaturmas at Belgavi Shakha Math, Guruswamiji was very much impressed by the behaviour and pious nature of a Batu by the name Uday Bhat Sharma. This Batu happened to be the second son of the Purohit of Belgavi Shakha Math Vedmurthy Laxminarayan Bhat. Swamiji did not indicate about His choice during the entire Chaturmas Vrata, as may be He wanted to learn more about this Batu’s inclination towards spiritually and human behaviour. Swamiji had His own methods to gather the information about any matter and finally He decided to send an order to this Batu to offer himself for the Seva at the Lotus Feet of Shree Ramdev Veervithal. The Batu Uday Bhat Sharma, in the midst of his college education, readily accepted Guruswamiji’s call and presented himself in person at the Lotus Feet of Shree Ramdev Veervithal and Guruswamiji at Shree Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math. Thus Guruswamiji’s wish to appoint a Shishya was fulfilled by the grace of Shree Ramdev Veervithal.
Uday Bhat Sharma is the second son of Vedmurthy Laxminarayan Bhat and Sou. Padmavati Laxminarayan Bhat. Vedmurthy Laxminarayan Bhat was inducted as the Purohit of Shakha Math at Belgavi in the year 1996 by Param Pujya Srimad Vidyadhiraj Swamiji. Shri. Laxminarayan Bhatji looked after the affairs of Shakha Math along with his two sons to the satisfaction of Guruswamiji. Both his sons were totally devoted in the service of God and the Guru Math under the able guidance of their father. Uday Bhat Sharma completed his primary and secondary school education at Belgavi and secured an admission in the Maratha Mandal Engineering College at Belgavi. He was a brilliant student and possessed a pleasing personality. He showed ample of devotion and focus in whatever work that was entrusted to him, may be at Shakha Math, school, college or household and nothing could distract his mind away from the assignments at hand. His studious nature also impressed many who interacted with him at that young age. Konkani is his mother tongue, however he is also proficient in Marathi, Kannada, Sanskrit, Hindi and English languages. Upon the receipt of an order from Guruswamiji to join the Services of the Math at Partagali, Uday Bhat Sharma left the studies in the middle and willingly accepted the order from Guruswami and presented himself at the Lotus Feet of Shree Ramdev Veervithal and Guruswamiji at Shree Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math on Jyestha Shukla Dwitiya, Jay Naam Samvatsar, Shake 1936, Friday, 30th May 2014. Coincidently, this day was Samvatsaric Punyateethi of 18th Yativarya of Math Hierarchy, Srimad Purnapradnya Teerth Swamiji.
Guruswamiji then ceremoniously confirmed the acceptance of Batu Uday Bhat Sharma as a Shishya in an Ashram Diksha ceremony held in Durmukh Naam Samvatsar, Shake 1938, Magh Shukla Tryodashi, Thursday, 9th February 2017 at auspicious Muhurth 09.22 a.m., which was enthusiastically attended in large numbers by the followers of Math. Shishya Swami was renamed as Srimad Vidyadheesh Teerth Sripad Vader by the Guruswami. Ever since He was inducted in the Math Hierarchy, Param Pujya Shishya followed all the discipline and rituals of the Guru Math. He devotedly submitted himself at the Lotus Feet of Shree Ramdev Veervithal and Guruswami and attended with enthusiasm and joy all the rituals and Sevas of the Deity and Vrundavanasth Guru Swamijis of the Math hierarchy. He took keen interest in studying Sanskrit language in detail and learnt Vedas, Mantras, Jyotishya, poetry and such other literature under the vigilant eyes of Guruswami. A tutor was appointed for the said purpose and Shishya Swamiji obediently attended the teachings. He accompanied Guruswamiji during their Holy visits to various Shakha Maths and other religious places and was encouraged and guided to give Pravachanas which were brilliantly compiled and addressed to the large audience. Those who listened to the Pravachanas were very much satisfied with the compilations and privately endorsed the Shishya Swamiji as the right choice who deserved to be their next Guruswamiji.
